Contract rollover issues

Why copying can break around futures contract rollover, since OmenSyncer mirrors the exact contract month the leader traded, and how to clear a stale position.

Updated July 19, 2026

OmenSyncer has no automatic contract rollover. A follower trades the leader's exact contract month. So when the leader rolls to a new month, an open position a follower still holds on the old month is not closed for you. Here is why, and how to roll cleanly.

OmenSyncer copies the leader's exact contract month

When your leader fills, OmenSyncer copies the exact contract it traded, month code and all. If the leader trades the September contract, followers get the September contract. The copier never rewrites the month or year to a newer contract on its own. When a follower is on a different broker, the contract is translated to the equivalent one there, but the expiry stays the same.

This is deliberate. Guessing a different month than the leader actually traded is the kind of silent mistake a copier should never make. Whatever month the leader is on, followers enter that same month.

Where rollover trouble comes from

Because entries always match the leader, the trouble isn't new orders. It is open positions left on an old month:

  • The leader rolls to the new front month while a follower still holds an open position on the old month. New trades copy fine on the new month; the stale old-month position just sits there.
  • A follower has a manual position on a different month than the leader is trading.
  • The leader trades a month a follower's broker treats as expired or not tradable, so that follower's order is rejected.

Why a stale old-month position isn't auto-closed

Follower Protection, the safety net that flattens a follower when the leader exits a symbol, matches on the exact contract, month included. So when the leader flattens the new front month, that does not flatten a follower still holding the old month, because to the system those are two different contracts. The old-month position is left exactly as it is, for you to close.

Important
This is the one to watch at rollover. A follower can be left holding an old-month position after the leader has fully moved to the new month. Check your followers are flat on the old contract before you consider the roll done.

How to roll cleanly

  1. Get flat first. Before rollover day, close open positions on both the leader and the followers so nobody carries the old month into the roll.
  2. Roll everyone together. Move the leader to the new contract month. Since followers copy the leader's month, trading the new month on the leader is what carries them across.
  3. Confirm nothing is stranded. Check no follower still holds a position on the old contract. If one does, close it by hand.

A contract the follower's broker considers expired comes back as a rejection, not a silent miss, so you'll see an alert. Background in Rejected orders.
